During the July holidays, 54 musicians from ACG Parnell College’s Symphony Orchestra and Concert Band travelled to Sydney to participate in the Australian International Music Festival. The Festival programme offered the opportunity for the young musicians to learn from, as well as compete against, orchestras, concert bands, big bands and chamber orchestras from all around the world. There were no separate divisions to divide up the instrumental ensemble categories and there were no age limits. It was with a great sense of pride and achievement when both of our groups were awarded Silver Awards at the close of the competition.
Although the competition was one aspect of the festival, it was certainly not the highlight for our students. As part of the festival, we were given the opportunity to perform at the Sydney Opera House, one of the most iconic venues in this part of the world. Our musicians were also provided with workshop and rehearsal exchange opportunities at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, which gave them the opportunity to work and learn alongside students from across the globe.
This trip was an extremely valuable learning opportunity for the Symphony and Concert Band musicians. It was the biggest international trip the school has undertaken and was the first time our music ensembles have travelled internationally to perform. Congratulations to all the young musicians involved. A special thank you to the parents and teachers who were involved in contributing to the success of this trip, and to those parents who travelled to Sydney to support our performances.
